New Zealand offers many world-class mountain bike trails across the country. Each trail is a mix of different difficulty levels to suit all levels of experience. If you’re travelling to New Zealand as a family there’s plenty of opinions available to spend quality time together as a family exploring the beauty of New Zealand’s scenic views. Here are some of the best mountain bike rides for the family that New Zealand has to offer.
Timber Trail is located on the North Island of New Zealand and is an 85km long pathway through some of the most beautiful forest scenery in the world. While there’s plenty of trails to do with different grades it’s the perfect place to take the family to enjoy the natural scenery. The trail is divided into different trails which you can spilt up into different days and take the time to explore the area with your family instead of cycling.
Great Lake Trail
The Great Lake Trail is a grade two mountain bike trail offering stunning views of Lake Taupo. The trial is 71kms long and will take about 1-2 days to complete. The trail sections are:
- Waihaha (from Western Bays Road) to Kotukutuku Stream (31 km)
- Whangamata Road to Kawakawa Bay and Kinloch (18 km)
- W2K (Kinloch to Kawhaipo Bay) and Headland Loop (14 to 24 km)
As you family you can decide which trail you want to do. The course is spilt into three different sections allowing you do spend a morning or afternoon doing the trail and the rest of the time enjoying all that Lake Taupo has to offer.
Lake Wakatipu Ride
The Lake Wakatipu Trail is located in Queenstown, while just a short ride (15kms) it has plenty of views and things to do in the surrounding area. You’ll cycle around Lake Wakatip on a flat surface which is great for those with kids just learning to cycle or are not confident yet to go on more advanced courses
Around The Mountains Trail
Due to open in 2015 the Around the Mountains Trail is a great choice for those who love gazing at the beauty of mountain ranges. This trail is long at 175kms and will take around 2-3 days to complete. It allows families to discover some of New Zealand’s most secluded and rustic rural settings at a relaxing pace without sacrificing the comforts of home.
