New Zealand Cycle Trail Highlights

Mountain biking is a great way to see a scenic side of New Zealand, including many areas and regions that can’t be accessed in any other way. With trails all across the country, the scope for exploration is practically limitless. The trails are all well maintained and accessible by car, and with the help of bike mount rentals New Zealand, you should be able to ride just about anywhere. There are some fantastic trails to explore of varying lengths, so you can pick something that fits your level of skill and experience.

  • Taranaki Downhills. For those with experience behind them and a thirst for adrenaline, these are heart-plummeting downhill drops along an 18km track. The back country provides ample reward for those brave enough to take it on though, with fantastic views starting from the Bridge to Nowhere and ending up at the Whangamomona Pub where you can enjoy a well deserved drink and meal.
  • Summerhill Farm. Located just outside of Tauranga, this is a privately-owned park and working farm with a huge range of different trails to try for all skill levels. For beginners there are gentle tracks through rolling farmland, and for those who want to test themselves out there are skill-based areas and plenty of drops. There’s also plenty of native forest to explore on foot if you get tired.
  • Waikato Trails. The Te Aroha mountain bike track in the Waikato region is a great way to see some of the unique geography of the region. Spanning 10km it’s fairly mid-level going through winding foothills, often covered in native forest. There are also waterfalls to be seen, as well as Mokena Geyser, which is the only hot water geyser in the world. The end point brings you to a network of natural hotsprings, which are perfect for relaxing.
  • Wellington City. One of the most popular tracks in New Zealand is the Makara Peak track – and for good reason. Winding through native bush, it offers incredible views across the Cook Strait and is a great way to explore the 200 hectares of the park.

There are an incredible selection of mountain biking New Zealand trails to try, and all are easily accessible by rental car properly fitted with a bike rack, making them easy to explore as part of your journey around the country.
